Malagorse is a perfect base for cycling enthusiasts.

Road Cycling : Bike hire can be arranged locally, it can be quite hilly so for those less avid cyclist, electric bikes are a great compromise.

Mountain Biking: We have some fabulous MTB routes to explore directly from Malagorse, ask us for maps & advice.

Hiking

Towns & villages

Martel (10 min drive)
Martel enchants visitors with its medieval charm, cobblestone streets wind through the village, lined with half-timbered houses adorned with colorful shutters. Martel’s main square, Place des Consuls, is a focal point, where locals gather for the Wednesday & Saturday markets. Steeped in history, Martel boasts ancient fortifications and the impressive Saint-Maurice Abbey. There is a fantastic choice of restaurants & lively bars.

Souillac (10 min drive)
A local market town which has a wonderful market under the handsome ‘Halles’ on a Friday. The church of Sainte-Marie is one of the jewels of Romanesque sculpture and architecture in the Midi Pyrenées. You can find all the major amenties here.

Rocamadour (30 min drive)
Rocamadour is renowned for its captivating beauty and rich history. Perched dramatically on a limestone cliff overlooking the Alzou River gorge, its origins trace back to the 12th century when it became a major pilgrimage site due to the discovery of an ancient relic, the perfectly preserved body of Saint Amadour. The village is a harmonious blend of architectural marvels, with narrow cobblestone streets leading to ancient chapels, monasteries, and the towering castle perched atop the cliff.

Jardins du Manoir d’Eyrignac

Caves

Grottes de Lacave
The synthesis of French caves. There is train access to the caves, then embark on a walking tour through the extensive galleries to discover fairy-tale caverns and mesmerizing limestone formations.

Gouffre de Padirac
Take a trip in a small boat 103 m beneath the ground along 500m of river to explore this underground world. Continue on foot through vast galleries including the Cavern of the Great Dome ( 94m high). Three lifts take you down to this unique and grandiose wonder of nature.

Grottes de Cougnac
A captivating cave system renowned for its prehistoric paintings and formations. Discovered in 1949, it features stunning stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are over 10,000 years old. The cave’s walls are adorned with intricate depictions of prehistoric life, including drawings of bison, horses, and mammoths.

Grotte de Pech Merle
Located in the Lot, the cave is famous for its prehistoric paintings, which date back over 20,000 years. These paintings depict various animals, human figures, and abstract symbols, providing valuable insights into the lives and beliefs of ancient peoples. The cave also features impressive geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites.

Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux
The chateau is a medieval fortress, dating back to the 12th century, it stands as a prime example of medieval military architecture. With its imposing walls, towers, and fortified gates, the château offers a glimpse into the strategic importance it once held in protecting the region. surrounding countryside.

Château de Montal
A Renaissance masterpiece built between 1519 and 1534, it showcases the elegant blend of late Gothic and early Renaissance architectural styles. Its intricate carvings, ornate ceilings, and beautiful gardens make it a captivating example of French Renaissance architecture. It was commissioned by Jeanne de Balsac.

Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
A medieval fortress situated high above the Dordogne River, it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle has undergone various reconstructions over the centuries. It played a significant role in the Hundred Years’ War and is now a popular tourist attraction, showcasing medieval weaponry and armor.

Château de Fénelon
Birthplace of François de Salignac, dating back to the 13th century, this picturesque fortress boasts a rich history and stunning architecture. Beautifully furnished and decorated rooms each in the style of a particular period from the 15th to the 19th century.

Château de Hautefort
A Loire château that has ended up in the Périgord by mistake!
